History

US bank customers began using registered papers as some a payment form in accredited establishments until credit cards were introduced in 1951. From then on, banks would issue credit cards to customers who can use them to pay the merchants. A joint venture was formed through the Interbank Card Association (ICA) in 1966, which later changed its name to MasterCard Worldwide. The group created its own rules for settlement and clearing the accounts. It also operated under a legal structure that helped establish security and the marketing strategies of the company.

ICA partnered with different finance groups in Europe and other countries, setting up its own global network. MasterCard then became a famous brand for debit and credit cards that uses a secured POS system and network channels. It also features a contactless system for payment.
