American Express History

American Express is a joint venture for express service that later became one of the most successful global payment systems. It was established in 1850 and has marked more than 150 years of reliable service to customers. From forwarding freights, the company then offered its first money orders some time in 1882. In 1891, travelers' cheques were extended to customers who needed more convenient ways to pay their merchants and other service establishments. This helped more people acquire travel and leisure benefits through a widely-accepted payment form.

Best-known for its multi-colored cards, the first American Express cards were released in 1958. These cards are accepted through a highly-secured point-of-sale (POS) system and global network used by merchants, finance groups, and card holders. Various business partnerships helped create a good name for American Express as a financial product developer and service provider.
