Using your credit card online

21 May 2008

There are a few security concerns to remain aware of when using a credit card online. The first step to ensuring the safety of your credit card online is to keep your computer as secure as possible. This means using a reliable firewall and installing anti-malware software set to perform regular scans of your system. While doing this cannot guarantee safety, it should greatly decrease the chances of a threat endangering your credit card details.

You will also need to be aware of common scams to get your credit card details when using your credit card online. Phishing sites are sites that look very similar to legitimate sites asking for your credit card details. They are designed to fool you into thinking you are using the site you want and will usually be indistinguishable from the legitimate site. Some web browsers and programs can detect phishing attempts, or at least suggest when they may be likely, so look into using them to help keep your credit card online secure.

Scams via email are also very common, although they are much easier to spot than phishing scams. Usually you will receive an unsolicited email that asks for your credit card details. This may be asking about a purchase from a site you frequent or are likely to frequent. Obviously, if you haven't made the purchase it details, don't reply. If it doesn't mention a specific purchase, then it's almost certainly a scam.
